About Anna Cooper

I qualified in l982 from the Carrington school of traditional Alexander Technique,

Walter Carrington having trained with F M Alexander himself. I was one of the Alexander teachers who participated in the ATEAM trial reported in the British Medical Journal, and I work with the Scientific Research Committee of STAT, the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique.

In addition to teaching practices in Dorking and Guildford I give corporate workshops, adult education courses, on-site workstation assessments and presentations on the Alexander Technique.  Clients have included Kingston NHS, the Central Office of Information, Unum, Sanofi Aventis etc. I regularly attend and conduct Continuing Professional Development workshops.

People I have taught include surgeons, doctors, physiotherapists, IT consultants, gardeners, office workers, judges, teachers, career advisors, shop assistants, children and teenagers and people in their 80s and 90s.

In a previous incarnation I lived on the continent working as a conference interpreter for the EU and business organizations, and speak fluent French and German.  When talking about the Alexander Technique, however, I strive to use plain English.

Professional

I am a member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT).  STAT was founded in 1958 to ensure high standards of teacher training and practice.  It is the world’s oldest and largest professional body of Alexander Technique teachers.

Teaching members (MSTAT) have successfully completed a 3-year, full-time training course approved by the Society and have agreed to abide by the Society’s published Code of Professional Conduct. They hold professional indemnity insurance.

Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council

I am registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), which is the UK independent regulatory body set up to regulate complementary health professionals.  Members agree to adhere to the CNHC’s Code of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.

The Department of Health and doctors recommend that, where the CNHC registers the professional discipline in question (in this instance Alexander Technique teaching), you should always consult with someone who is CNHC-registered.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)

As a condition of membership of the professional association (STAT) I hold an Enhanced Disclosure Criminal Record Check Certificate.
